About The Research

Role Of Oxidative Stress In Valproic Acid-Induced Hepatotoxicity. Many patients with epilepsy take valproic acid to control seizures. Although the drug is generally safe, it has been associated with a rare but irreversible liver failure that can be fatal particularly in children. It’s not clear how valproic acid causes liver failure. My research project is to identify factors involved in the development of liver toxicity by this drug and to determine how to prevent this serious side effect. The experiments will be conducted rat and human hepatocytes as well as in young epileptic patients who are receiving valproic acid.
