Rho-kinase in diabetic cardiomyopathy: cellular mechanisms underlying a novel treatment

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is characterized by systolic and diastolic dysfunction, independent of hypertension or ischemia. Currently, there is no specific drug available for its prevention or treatment. The cellular mechanisms underlying this condition have not been well elucidated but recently, our lab found that inhibition of the RhoA/Rho-kinase pathway led to complete recovery of contractile function in diabetic hearts, suggesting that this pathway plays a central role in diabetic cardiomyopathy. My project investigates the mechanisms by which inhibition of this pathway led to normalization of the contractile function of diabetic hearts.
