Research Projects

Development and characterization of intravesical mucoadhesive nanoparticulate formulations for postoperative chemotherapy in bladder cancer.

Urinary bladder cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed malignancies in North America. The most common treatment method is transurethral resection followed by Intravesical chemotherapy which involves instillation of one or more chemotherapeutic agents into the bladder. However, the major limitation of this treatment is the rapid and almost complete washout of the drugs from the bladder on first void of urine, and low exposure of chemotherapeutic to tumor sites in the bladder wall, which ultimately leads to treatment failure. The goal of my research is to develop nanoparticulate formulations of drugs that are adhesive to the bladder wall, increase bladder tissue uptake and effective in treating bladder tumors.
