In its first year, PharGS has drafted and ratified the Constitution which governs its objectives and operations, established a UBC chapter of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), programmed a professional development workshop series, was involved in the construction and furnishing of the graduate student lounge, and created annual organized social events that bring together faculty, staff, and students. The intent of PharGS is to build upon these successes to promote the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate students to academic, government and private sector groups. We plan to promote interaction among these groups by coordinating graduate student representation on Faculty and University committees and by organizing professional and social gatherings.
By ensuring graduate student representation on a wide range of committees and organizations, PharGS acts as an information conduit for graduate students. PharGS provides graduate student input on faculty committees ranging from teaching, curriculum, safety and infrastructure changes. Representation to the UBC graduate student society (GSS) and teaching assistant’s union (CUPE) are also coordinated through PharGS. It is through these representatives that graduate students in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences have advocates and are informed of occurrences, decisions, policies, and issues that will impact the development of their careers.
In order to encourage the interaction of graduate students amongst ourselves, with faculty members as well as the university and pharmaceutical sciences communities, PharGS works to organize several events throughout the year that promote professional networking opportunities. Visitors to the faculty are invited by PharGS to provide insight from their experiences in industry, government, or academia. A series of professional development workshops are held through the school year to develop skills essential for future career paths. Social and sports events are organized to promote building a well-rounded and rewarding community that will enhance your graduate studies experience.
