The Health Care Utilization and Economic Burden of SARDS:
Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases, or SARDs, are a group of related chronic rheumatic disorders, including lupus, predominantly affecting females of many ages. Manifesting in the skin, muscles, and joints, and affecting the cardiovascular, renal, and pulmonary systems, they can cause significant morbidity and shorten lifespan. Since they are rare, data on the epidemiology and health care utilization, and therefore the public health impact and burden, of these disorders as a group is limited, particularly for Canada. This project will use linked administrative data obtained from the BC Ministry of Health to compile each healthcare resource utilized by SARDs patients, including physician visits, hospitalizations, and prescriptions. Using government payment schedules and billings, the total direct medical costs will be calculated, and the burden SARDs impart on the health care system quantified. This work, which involves colleagues both at CORE and the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada, in Vancouver, is especially needed to assess the feasibility of coverage for some emerging and expensive, but potentially effective, treatments for SARDs, like biological therapies.
