A Stellar New Learning and Research Environment

A new quarter-million square foot facility opens Fall/2012 to benefit students, alumni and the Pharmacy profession throughout British Columbia. Made possible by an $86.4-million investment from the Province of BC in the essential role of pharmacists in healthcare delivery and design, the new building houses for the first time under one roof all the teaching, learning, research and community outreach activities of the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Teaching/learning spaces range from lecture halls to classrooms to problem-based learning seminar rooms, as well as study spaces for students. A Pharmacists Clinic and The Story of Medicines, an interactive community education exhibit, invite and engage the public in truly revolutionary ways. Three floors of research space include housing the Centre for Drug Research and Development.

The new facility will anchor the southeast end of the UBC Point Grey campus, neighboring the Life Sciences Centre and its medicine and life science students and researchers for ideal collaboration across the health disciplines. Designed by internationally renowned Montreal architects Saucier+Perrotte (with Vancouver’s Hughes Condon Marler), the facility is built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification.

Features

The Pharmacists Clinic
A teaching and learning clinic that will provide community members direct patient care and medication management services through seminars, care clinics and personal consultations. Students practice patient counseling while practicing pharmacists may upgrade their skills.

The Story of Medicines
Academic pharmacy is the only discipline that touches the entire lifecycle of a drug, from bench to bedside. This educational and interactive public exhibit will illustrate this through real stories of modern medicines—from how they were discovered to how they have improved the lives and well-being of millions of people.

Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD)
An independent, non-profit organization that translates research discoveries into new medicines. CDRD works with researchers across UBC and industry to provide the scientific, technical and commercial expertise needed to assess the chances that a research breakthrough will lead to the development of a viable drug.
